Chemical and physical properties of Ozone:

Ozone (from Greek, ozein, odor), is a naturally occurring and unstable molecule. Ozone occurs naturally as a gas that has a pale sky-blue color and a pungent odor.

Among oxidizing agents, ozone is the third most potent after fluorine and persulfate, a fact that explains its high reactivity.
Ozone is produced artificially with oxygen by means of special generators(such as the 360) with corona discharge in an endothermic process requiring high voltage gradients between electrodes, or by UV radiation.

The half-life of the ozone molecule depends on temperature; in fact, at 20° C the ozone concentration halves in 40 minutes, at 30° C in 25 minutes.

Ozone possesses highly biocidal properties is globally used in water potabilization and effluent treatment
(CHO et al, 2003). Compared to other disinfectants it is 1.5 times more oxidizing than chlorine and 3000 times hypochlorous acid (Suslow, 1998).

It is found to be very effective even at low concentrations against a wide range of microorganisms (Khadre and Yousef, 2001) including viruses (Kekez and Sattar, 1997) and does not leave toxic residues or byproducts like other disinfectants (Fan et al, 2007).
